Therapeutic Ultrasound for Skin Rejuvenation

Most people are aware of ultrasound being used for imaging but don't realize that ultrasound can be used to rejuvenate skin and promote collagen production. Practitioners use the ultrasound treatment to target muscle tissue and skin layers. They can use the device to focus the ultrasound where it is most needed.

Ultrasound therapy - long used for imaging and other treatments - is now helping to give people's tighter more vibrant skin. Ultrasound uses noninvasive sound energy to lift the eyebrow, neck and under-chin, smooth décolletage (upper chest area), lines, and wrinkles as well.

Ultrasound therapy uses sound vibrations that occur at a frequency that is too high for people to hear. The vibrations are provided by a applicator connected to a generator. The applicator converts electrical energy from the generator into ultrasound vibrations. When ultrasound is used for skin rejuvenation the applicator causes the tissue to vibrate. The vibrations are used to provide a micro-massage to tissues. This micro-massage results in the reduction of inflammation, tightening of skin, toning of muscles, and rehydration of the skin with collagen. All of this occurs because the massage action of the ultrasound stimulates the tissue and increases the blood flow. This allows the body to supply nutrients and carry away wastes from the area being treated.

Ultrasound uses different frequencies. The frequency refers to the number of vibrations per second. The most common frequencies used for therapeutic ultrasound is from one to three million vibrations per second. As an example 1 megahertz (1 MHz) is one million vibrations. These frequencies have been chosen for pain, inflammation, and skin toning treatments because of the depth of penetration. These depths at which the tissue vibrates with the transducer is appropriate for use on the average human body. Depth of penetration is different depending on what the underlying tissue is. On the average, 1 MHz ultrasound penetrates up to about 1.5 inches in muscle; and to about 6.0 inches in fat. 3 MHz is also used. 3 MHz penetrates only about 1/3 as far as 1 MHz. This makes it effective for use on very shallow tissue areas such as the hands, face, and skin. Although it is more shallow the vibration is faster. This is very effective for soft tissue treatment.

The ultrasound skin tightening device reaches under the skin, penetrating into the second layer of muscles underneath the facial muscles. Going into the lower layers of the skin matters because that's where your skin makes new collagen.

During a treatment a practitioner will apply a special lubricating jelly to the skin. This prevents friction so they can rub the ultrasound transducer on the skin. The transducer has a similar appearance to a microphone. The jelly also helps transmit the sound waves. The transducer sends the sound waves through the jelly and into the tissues.

Therapeutic ultrasound typically is best when used in conjunction with manual bodywork therapies. The ultrasound vibrates the fluid and waste materials, loosens it up, and allows it to be readily removed. This ultrasound prepares the tissues for the manual therapy. Then the manual therapy can more easily move the fluid and waste in order to exit the tissues. This intensifies the effect of the ultrasound.

Many people see a difference after one treatment but the full effect of the therapy can be seen after multiple treatments. Results vary per person. People with mild to moderate facial and neck skin laxity make good candidates for ultrasound therapy treatments. Even younger people (under age of 30) can use the procedure as a preventive measure.

Lymphatic Drainage Manual Therapy Massage with Facial Rejuvenation

Lymphatic drainage manual therapy is a specialized body work technique that is provided by advanced trained licensed and certified health care practitioners such as Nurses, Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists, and Physical Therapists. This therapy applies repetitive pressure at lymph node sites and a stroking technique along lymph vessels that stimulates the movement and removal of fluid and debris. This therapy is combined with ultrasound in the facial rejuvenation treatment.

At the end of the treatment the practitioner will apply a special homeopathic cream to intensify the ultrasound and lymphatic treatment. It contains ingredients that assist with wrinkles, inflammation, flabbiness, loose skin, skin tone, creepiness, and more.
